Hills Preceding the Kern Canyon

Hills Preceding the Kern Canyon

This perfectly balanced scene captures the flowing beauty and vibrant colors of the hills of San Felipe on a robust spring day. The shadows from the billowing clouds naturally bring out the centerpiece of this photograph, drawing attention to the soft curves of the green hillside. This picture was taken just south of Highway 178 near Rancheria Road and the dedication plaque of "el Río de San Felipe."

Colors of the Valley

Colors of the Valley

The inherent wide-angle effect of this view across the valley together with the abundance of color and seemingly limitless line of sight produce a magnificent photograph and conversation piece. Follow the road running horizontally through the picture from right to left into the V-shaped mouth of the Kern Canyon and you will have taken eastbound Highway 178. Just below the highway on the right side of the picture, you can see Rancheria Road branch off, running alongside the lush orange groves and crossing a small bridge over the Kern River. And if you look closely, far off into the distance, you can distinguish the snow-capped peaks of the southernmost mountains of the Central Valley as they mingle with the wispy clouds above.

Red Rose at the J. Paul Getty Museum

Red Rose at the J. Paul Getty Museum

This photograph of a tiny red rose at the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles brings to life the perfection of its delicate petals. The naturally vibrant color of the rose is accentuated by the deep green hue of the surrounding leaves and the dark brown soil beneath.

Tule Canyon Colors

This picture was taken at one of the lower camps in the Tule Canyon east of Porterville on Highway 190.

Autumn-Colored Winter

Autumn-Colored Winter

Although it is the middle of winter here, the Tule River at this low elevation still clings to the colors and characteristics of autumn.

Strength of Stone

Strength of Stone

There are many thought-provoking sights on the Tule River, but the image captured here is nothing short of breathtaking. It looks as though the large stone would immediately crush the smaller one, yet the smaller one continues to resist and refuses to break the balance.
